  • Young Neil's Gospel of Rock and Roll

I just love this stuff. I've had a bootleg of some of this - I haven't done a track-by-track comparison yet - and played it until the vinyl got scratchy. (Really, it's a CD so that's a lie.). I recently turned 70 and my tastes more and more return to the rhythms of high school in 1963 Idaho. This is that but with a richness (the horns, for example) and clarity - listen to the snare - that we couldn't imagine then. And Neil's inimitable (excerpt by Jimmy Fallon) voice is in top form. Just all around great.

Young Neil has not put out much good product of late. Psychadellic Pill was good. This was recored with the Blue Notes in 87/88. Fantastic sounding. Great songs. More please.
  • An icon with many ups and downs

NY's career has from a critical standpoint and a fan standpoint had many ups and downs. However, even the downs have had momentary brilliance. I remember when the original Bluenotes material was released, the reception was lukewarm at best. But for me it was a NY era that was one of my favorites. Hearing the few songs as yet available from this CD reaffirms why I liked it so much. On hindsight this periods ranks as one of his way way ups. Highly recommended.

These are beautifully crafted songs. If I was a record producer I'd be suing Neil for not sounding enough like Neil, but I'm not, so I can enjoy Neil going in other directions and very much succeeding.
