This man changed me with tree top flyer and that's why I'm giving him 5 stars. but beside that he is older and his voice isn't what it used to be. I respect the man but the time for retirement is soon. but I know I'll be hearin him in heaven pickin dem strings

I'm a huge CSN fan but after seeing Stephen Stills last year and listening to this CD, it is clear that he can no longer sing.
  • Diehards only!

I love the guy, but it's painful listening to his singing on this one. The voice is long gone. Good for nostalgia freaks, but otherwise a pass.

I love Stephen Stills and every band he has been a part of. I saw CSN last summer and had a great time. But this is just awful.

The tunes were a good mix, Stills can still finger pick with the best. But Stills couldn't carry the tunes with his voice.

I guess I'm one of those strange people who doesn't mind that their rock star has gotten older and things "just ain't the same." I loved this album because it isn't the same ol' slick packaged deal. How refreshing. Yeah, Stills' voice is a little ragged and shows the wear and tear of time and too many smokes. Last time I checked the calender it's been at least 40 years since many of these tunes were torching up the airwaves. The fact that they still spark me all these years says a whole lot. The guitar playing still thrills me and the format--a live concert where Stills is obviously havin' fun--is something different and a pleasure to listen to. I enjoy the album for the energy and variations on some wonderful favorites. My only regret is that I was not at Shepherd's Bush to catch this live.......

The apple review above is not very accurate, in my humble opinion. I saw Stephen Stills live on Jools not too long ago and was shocked at how his voice seemed almost completely shot. This recording sounds slightly better, but not much. The singing is still mostly atrocious compared to his heyday. On top of that, Stills' inarticulate pronunciation makes you wonder if he suffered some kind of minor brain damage not too long ago. The sound mix is poor and Stills' playing in particular playing is sloppy (not in a good way). This is the kind of recording that makes you feel sad the way you feel sad when faced with an aging relative on his sickbed. You remember what once was and this so obviously ain't it. Still a second star in the rating, purely from affection.

I don't expect Stephen Stills to stop playing music and retire at any time. I think he'll still be playing in heaven long after he leaves this world behind and I will always look forward to hearing anything he puts out.
  • Ugh. Retire already.

Stephen Stills has contributed a great deal to music. I consider myself a big fan. That being said, his voice is gone and there is no care put into the guitar playing anymore. The new Manassas release, Pieces, is great (because it's old) but this live experiment is just sloppy and sad. Painful.

Since the early 80's, Stephen Stills has played sporadic solo tours when time away from the mothership CSN(Y) left him time. These bands generally were a quartet of guitar/keyboard/bass and drums, usually anchored by Joe Vitale. Live at Shepherd's Bush accurately captures the Stephen Stills experience you will get should you see him when he comes to your neighborhood. Starting solo here, as he did in the show, acousticly, he opens with his big I Tunes era hit Treetop Flyer. Stephen works through examples of his acoustic style based on folk and and the blues. He is in fine voice (his new hearing aids really seem to have him singing on key these days!) and is very talkative between tunes. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes transitions the set to electric, and here is where I love this set best. Stephen Stills plays some fine guitar: rough; searing; soaring; sustain; clear and concise. The tone just hits hard, the great kind of hard that was the balls of CSN. I couldn't help thinking this is Stephen's Crazy Horse. I especially love the revivals of Isn't It About Time; Rock and Roll Woman and Bluebird. In short, Stephen rocks! A fine way to get your Stephen Stills fix whether you are a seasoned fan or just stopping by for the first time.
