  • Not your same old, same old

A wonderful Christmas album that's not the same old, same old (even if some songs are familiar). The slightly creepy "Down in yon forest" is one I've never heard elsewhere (although I'm from NC) and I love his version of ...well, every song here. I had this on CD back in the 90s but it's long since been lost. I'm so glad to have it now from iTunes!!

What a heavenly album! From many familiar carols, most with new twists, to some very old songs, this album leaves me in a reverie. I'm not terribly religious, but feel a soulful impact from the music and instrumentation. Every song is a revelation. Love "Riu Riu Chiu" and the "Huron Carol." Perfect for a cold winter's night as the holidays approach. I bought this years ago as a cassette, and was delighted to renew my acquaintance with it this year!

(I had a review up for this once upon a time...) I collect Christmas music, and each year this one gets the most playtime. Bruce has found a way to take the familiar and refresh it (O Little Town, Go Tell It, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear), but more importantly, he has found the obscure and has made them classics in my house. However, I challenge you to find a version of God Rest Ye with the same muted vitriol at the state of the World. Thank you, Bruce. Merry Christmas.

This album is easily my favorite Christmas album. Cockburn's rootsy, folky, and cajun filled selections set this album apart from all the other Holiday works. An absolute classic in my mind.
