When I first heard this in the back seat of a Subaru 4x4 wagon in the fall of 81, it was like being reborn and started a love affair for the Mats from that day on. Nothing conveys the energy and dysfunction of youth better than this album. I had been listening to bands like TSOL, DK, and Black Flag but when this album released, it was something different. It was lucid, evocative, visceral - a total blast and effectively portrayed Twin City street youth at the time. Buy this album.
  • Very subjectively filed under 1.5 hit wonders?

I was introduced to the Replacements by a friend with a respectable taste for music, but try as I may, I wasn't sold on their sound. It sounded like Crass and Social Distortion (blech!) decided to make babies in a Hot Topic store. BUT.... I am VERY fond of "Johnny's Gonna Die", it carries itself with a bittersweet comfort that's as unique as it is familiar. Of course I could just be stirring things up to hear what the reclusive fans have to say ;-)
  • one of the best albums of the century

This is an awesome album. Unlike the music today, this is raw. No over commercialized pop songs here. Just greatness. And, where are the comments from when they say these guys don't know how to play their instruments? Bob Stinson is no Jimmy Page, but still is pretty talented, if his guitar is tuned. And Tommy was only 14 years old.For that age, or any age, he was really good.
  • best thing I have listend to in awhile

This is with out a doubt a punk album but not in the cliche sence. This is some of the most rocken as well as the most honest music I have listend to in awhile. This is my first introduction to this band and all I can say is Iam completly blown away.
  • essential punk record

this is a classic front to back. never gets old. criminally underrated. bob's solos are treasures. chris is brutal. i think paul was singing with that voice at 17! tommy was, like 12 or something. one of my 3 favorite albums. not where punk came from. check out velvet underground, stooges, modern lovers, new york dolls, ramones, etc.

The Replacements 'Sorry Ma' is an accomplishment in punk rock recording and a tablature requisite for those who want to play the real thing.

I have only heard of the Replacements by my neighbor (even though he's 41) and if a 41-yr-old can like this, i think other people can too. I do like them...especially Hangin' Downtown.....i cant beilieve nobodys reviewed this!!!

Rough and raw, the punk roots of the greatest rock band of the 1980s, and maybe the greatest lost rock band in history, are on full view in their debut. Snotty, loud, fast, smart, tongue in cheek, fun, raucous. Classic. (P.S. Hearing this album, you can see the difference between talent and no-talent where punk is concerned.)

I can not believe I am the first to write a review. CLASSIC RECORD. Raw and loose recording. Guys who can hardly play their instruments. What else would you want. BUY THIS, Let it Be, Stink and Hoot. if you want great music from one of the best punk bands. Westerberg's solo material is good too, better than the last two Mat's records.
