Chris Standring; scores as one of my favorite 'smooth jazz guitarists' on-the-scene today. Right-up there with: Nils, Peter White, and Marc Antoine. According to his discography, this newest issue marks his tenth CD to date, and he swings 'full-speed' ahead on the Wes-bound train! There's alot of different textures, and laid-back grooves to be sure. But none the less, Chris always imparts a lot of funky imagery to all his tunes, and they abound here. Let's discuss the playlist; tunes like 'Snake Oil', and 'Parisian Blue' sound like a hip track-vibe; to a high-tech 'heist-movie', and are pleasingly cool! On the selection entitled, 'Like This Like That': Chris is in full-command of his instrument, and really soars out of sight, and he stretchs it out, with a nice flute backing track. Standring always slows it down on few moody selections, so that you'll have a chance to easily glide-along with his 'Magic Carpet Ride', and 'Never Too Late'. Both are worthy of comparison to the great Pat Metheny. The album finishes with a reprise of 'Magic Carpet Ride' done by Chris acoustically. I like this newest release by Chris Standring and it should please his long-time fans, and new found devotees. This one's another thumbs-up for Chris Standring.
