it is subtle, wonderfully orchestral score. what really stood out for me in this score was how brilliantly he blended the electronic and orchestral elements, it adds the extra element of a cinematic adventure while also staying grounded in adventure. just a fantastic score.
GREAT soundtrack... but missing one thing...

This is a great soundtrack that I have not gotten tired of after repeat listenings on the morning commute.
However.. it misses on really great track, the one where after Watney says he's "not going to die" and gets right to work fixing up the hab solar panels and preparing to farm... one of the best tracks in the movie and they neglected to include it.

For months I patiently waited for the movie to come out as well as the score. This score to me was completely different then what I had imagined. Very different direction emotionally. But for me this was one of those scores that I appreciated more the more I listen to it!

I love this more electronic side of HGW. Very subtle and complementary to the film's tone.
Wonderful score, stands tall on its own

The score for The Martian is even better without the movie. The movie was FANTASTIC—don't get me wrong. The sheer amount of success with which the filmmakers kept not only the emotion and soul of the story in line with the book, but all the characters were portrayed truly like their book counterparts as well...I'm in love.
The reason I say that it's better without the movie is because that's how it was specifically made. Harry Gregson-Williams said it was to be a backdrop for the film, often not even noticed. It was only to add subtle emotional prompts and cues, give gentle transitions between emotions and events, provide rise and fall along with the scenes. That's what it was made to do, and it does it perfectly. Often during the movie, you don't even notice it because it flows so perfectly along as a backdrop.
On its own, however, the true mastery of the score is incredibly obvious once you are able to hear it without distraction.
This soundtrack pulls in diverse musical elements create the perfect timing, tones, and overall feel. The masterful blending of orchestral music with small, almost retro davblings of electronic melody here and there create a beautiful and unique melody and emphasis.
It's fresh but classic, modern and futuristic but still contemporary, and emotional and dynamic without being overdone. There is nothing cheap, rushed, immature, or excessive about any track on this score. It's well worth the listen. Even if you haven't read or watched The Martian, you will fall in love with these tracks on their own merit.
