A Beautiful Album

Despite her rebel persona, Sinéad is rarely a screamer in her songs, and this album truly highlights her gifts as a singer. She clearly respects the reggae tradition, but her voice brings such a beautiful tenderness to the lyrics. Ireland and Jamaica are both former UK colonies sometimes struggling in a post colonial present. Sinéad’s singing shows that despite many cultural differences, some experiences are universal.

I heard Sinead's version of Downpressor Man on Sirius Radio and sought it specifically out, and very much enjoyed it. Then thought I'd give Vampire a try, then Throw Down Your Arms. All were so superlative, I was like, that's it, I'm getting the whole album and it has been such a JOY!
Friends are always pleasantly surprised when I tell them Sinead O'Connor has an awesome reggae album, but after listening they all agree!
Pure Roots

Sinead may have famously shaved her hair in protest on SNL - but on this album she shows her Roots. That is she shows the roots of Reggae. This is an album of love - produced by the classic team of Sly and Robbie and giving 10% of profits to help the elderly population in Jamaica. The music is authentic and Sinead brings her characteristic angst and lilt to the lyrics. She is clearly not just singing songs written on paper - but feeling them and interpreting them using her voice and emotion. She is one of the great, conflicted singers, however this album has lots of joy and meaning with it's reggae background. Got to love Downpressor Man, Marcus Garvey.

Sinead's spirit, at times defiant and at times tender, makes her the perfect narrator for the stories of Burning Spear and Peter Tosh in this collection. Ms. O hired the best session musicians on the island of Jamaica to create a crisp, fresh take on these songs. The bass lines that snake through "Y Mas Gan," "Vampire," and "Downpressor Man" are brilliant, and her delivery inspires goose bumps. This is a great introduction to roots, rock, and reggae for those who have a knowledge of the genre that is limited to Bob Marley's "Legend"

Sinead is possibly the only white woman in the world who could perform these songs with the honesty and the rebel spirit they require. The album's cover speaks volumes. Her spiritual journey has been a long winding road and this album was her huge step forward.
Whether she uses a slow intensity (Vampire), a gentle earnestness (Untold Stories) or a devout humility (War) she creates the same results . . . beauty. The album is her closest to whatever perfection there may be.
My heart thanks this beautiful piece of work.

heard "downpresser man" on the radio and was hooked. so glad i got this album. i crave it when i wake up, the neighbors are probably getting annoyed. "curly locks" and "vampire" are my favorites, but the whole album is amazing.
