Wow what a find. I thought -like many people probably- Weill was about the 'Seven deadly sins' ... A shame that his 2nd symphony hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves.
  • Visually Amazing!

It really is amazing how the contemperary composers of this century are so animated in their orchestrations. This perticular orchestration of Weill's symphonies, to say none the least, is visually amazing! It almost seems as if the music could be put into a cinematic setting, with the cameras zooming in and out on various scenes. One could almost say that alot of the common movie soundtracks we hear today are directly inspired by music of this sort. So much emotion and personal feelings flows through the music that you can almost see a woman crying, a man angrily shouting, or a busy common town square bustling with life. I very much enjoyed the second symphony, which is introduced with a dark and melancholy beginning with the bass strings. The symphony later takes on a lighter sort of "jumping" mood. The second movement resembles a lumbering ship at sea (to me, that is). The third movement is written in a lively mood. I really enjoyed all the music on this terrific album, and I hope you will as well!
  • Something More Than Mack The Knife!

Another exquisite rendering from the Naxos label and most certainly from Martin Alsop and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Probably the most popular work of Kurt Weill was from "A Threepenny Opera" a simple dark edged ditty called "Mack The Knife" Oh yeah, that'll set your toes stapping and heart thumping. However the works performed here are definitely orchestral in nature. They are bold majestic and sweeping works and are highly recommended! Download the 2nd Symphony at the very least! You'll get away less expensively if you just download the whole album and not (I trust) be disappointed. Great stuff!

Weill was one of those composers that floated around my head for years before I (honestly) got bored enough to give him a shot. I'm quite glad I did. This is the number one reason why Naxos is such a great label. You can go out on a limb on something new without losing your house in the process. I've been, and continue to be, astonished as to just how many "second" or supposed "third" rate composers I end up finding lots of pleasure in. Naxos has helped me break the "Triple B" grip. If you're looking for something fresh too, here it is.
