I described Frisell's other recent album (Floratone) as intoxicating. I describe this one as pure satisfaction. Not only is the subtle exchange between these three masters pure poetry (listen to the way Carter and Frisell shadow each other on different parts of the melody on Davis's 81), but the incorporation of folk themes that Frisell has been pursuing for so long into this jazz context is truly powerful. Pretty Polly and Monroe are two of the most haunting tracks I have heard in a long time. This album plus Floratone is enough to captivate your listening for weeks. Every time I listen, the music reveals more of itself. I saw this three-some play live at the Blue Note last week. The amazing thing was the way Frisell never seemed to play himself into a corner. He was constantly pushing Carter and Motion to challenge him as he twisted his way through harmony after harmony. He reminds me of one of those brilliant minds that can seemingly write pages and pages of mathmatical equations in an old fountain pen and never make a mistake. You feel in presence of many many years of musical discovery.

Wonderful sense of space and harmony. These guys really play well together. One of the best albums of 2006.
  • Chalk one up to the "Listening Stations"

I found this CD at a "Listening Station" at the local Border's - usually not the bastion of the musical elite! From the personel I expected something WAY out, and it does go out, but I was totally surprised at how accessible it turned out to be! Frisell proves once again that it's all about how you play, not what you play. I described the intro to "...Sunshine" to my wife as, "not one of the right notes, all the chords are wrong, and the rhythm is so free as to be indistinguishable, but it WORKS!!!" And work it does, from the first note to the last these three grab and hold your attention as they investigate what it really means to be a jazz combo. Every note seems inspired, you can almost imagine the black-and-white 60's-style photograph that they must have looked like while recording - eyes closed, beads of sweat, hunched over the drums, leaning back while bending the string. This is what we should be listening to and learning from. Artists in the act of creating. And it WORKS!

Music making of a very high order. Wonderful, subtle playing. Highly recommended. NIce to hear Bill playing jazz. Carter & Motian are tremendous. Also recommended are recordings by the Paul Motian Trio with Frisell & Lovano on board. "I Have the Room Above Her' is particularly fine.

Simply gorgeous. Frisell with Paul Motian and Ron Carter? This is a no brainer. All the trademark Bill accompanied by two of the finest musicians on the planet. This is warm and luscious and engaging. In a world that seems to have gone mad, Frisell keeps giving us these gorgeous environments. These are songs as worlds, each as captivating as its predecessor. Listening to this will make you feel good. A must for the true fan and a great introduction for those unfamiliar with Bill and his music.

I can hear some "Strange Meeting" in "Worse for Worse," and a little bit of "Family" (from 'Nashville') in the Monroe intro. This album is fantastic, and one of Frisell's best. (I admit I say that nearly every time he releases an album.) As usual, the sound here is warm and spacious.
