The evolution of Morgan James continues. She has moved from a big label and covers to an extremely powerful original album (her third) that just knocks your socks off. This is an album that lets, nay, begs you to lose yourself to the music. Morgan James captures the heart and soul while paying homage to some of the greats of the past (Aretha, Motown, etc.) Make no mistake, this is all original but immediately feels like a classic. The music is strong. Morgan James voice is powerful, full of range and passion. Her voice has long stood out. Couched in powerful vintage soul vibe originals, this is one satisfying, timeless, wonderful gift. (Doug Wamble is the lead guitarist for the band and absolutely awesome as well).
The album starts off with "Give You Up" (and a really funky baseline). Immediately in a good mood. Give the lyrics a listen (this is where the soul/blues comes in). Deeper soul kicks in with "All I Ever Gave You" which features great phrasing and strong connections. "Better Me" is one of the slower, more subdued pieces (but still treats the listener to Morgan's wonderful range). "You Won't Let Me" is a thoughtful, reflective masterpiece. "You Know My Name" lets you know that she is here for you.
Here's the thing, each song seems like my favorite until the next one starts. This is an album of absolute hit standouts. The voice and the band combine to create an experience. There are also a couple of duets with guest vocalists (Ryan Shaw, "I Dont' Mind Waking Up (To A Love This Good) & Marc Broussard, "Love Ain't Worth Living" ). There is even one instrumental song "The Lark" (featuring the Memphis String Quartet). "I Wish You Would" brings back the funk ( in a good way). This is a real toe tapper that will have you singing along.
