Hynde survived the tragic deaths of two band members and friends to make her peak album, blending rock, rockabilly and pop into a handful of inonic songs. There are reasons why even people who don't know any other Pretenders know 4 or 5 of these gems more than 3 decades later. I don't think it's quite a 5-star album unless you're a dedicated Chrissie fan. There's some filler and weak spots. But those 4 or 5 great songs, wow.

"Watching the Clothes" should have been hung out to dry.
  • Best Pretenders album

This is by far the best Pretenders album, by far exceeding even the classic debut. There is only one track, Watching the Clothes, that I wouldn't consider a classic. Listen to the rest and enjoy yourself.

I kept asking my friend Bridget how Crissie Hynde could "do that with her voice," and she finally said, "Well that's why she's a star and we're not!" That just about sums it up for me.

Two better songs to lead off an album could not be found- Middle Of The Road and Back On The Chain Gang. Plus , the rest are great as well- Show me is beautiful, and what a vocal on Thin Line Between Love And Hate... both delicate and powerful. 2000 Miles will forever be a Christmas classic.

Rather ironic that "My City is Gone," which this review claims is about "Reagan-era economic devastation," is now Rush Limbaugh's theme song. Perhaps the reviewer meant Carter-era economic devastation? We may never know....
  • Simply one of the best!

"Timeless" can be a cliche, but it truly fits this album. There are no weak tracks--driving or mellow, reflective or angry, their sound is powerful and Chrissy Hynde's voice is awesome. Almost 25 years later it still rocks!

Just a great all round album. This band knew how to rock, my personal favorites? "Time the Avenger" - a relentless driving ode to aging that ramps up to a screaming guitar driven ending = bloody Gorgeous!!! and "I hurt you" Chrissie Hynde at her very bitterest and vunerable, but you'd be mistaken to think this lady is soft - she's hard as nails! In short a triumphant return after the death of original Pretenders members James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Fardon, both of drug overdoses in under a year! If you could only have one Pretenders album this would be it.

The Pretenders are better than crawling and more like running. This is a masterpiece and a must have for any real music lover. Chrissie Hynde is one of the greatest rockers in history. Great workout tunes too!
