  • When Donovan Spoke To Me

This is the Donovan album that connected with me in my youth. It is the one that I gazed at intentenly while the record spun on the turntable. The light and playful lyrics kept me smiling. The instrumentation is phenomenal. The rhythmic exploration on some of the tunes still floors me. No doubt he had FUN in the studio. My favorite tracks ... Sun, Oh Gosh, and Lay of the Last Tinker.

I used to own the vinyl LP and listened to it often when I was in my 20's. Life moved on and now my 50's I heard Donovan's "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden" for the first time in over 20 years. I knew every word to every song. Tears welled up in my eyes as I sang along with these simple, yet deeply meaningful, songs.

  • Donovan's best

For the few reviews listed here, all have this in common that we love the album. I will also say that I don't think as a kids' album, although it could be listened to by children. It is thoughtful, lovely, and poetic. I love the light feel it has, and I can listen to it straight through and find it a great listen. My two favorite songs , although I love all of it, are " The Mandolin and His Secret" and " Epistle to Derroll". Both are beautiful melodies, a little sad ,and pure Donovan.
  • Donovans best

This album is probably the best Donovan has ever done. The music is timeless poetry that defines Donovan as the brilliant singer/songwriter that he is. Although "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" and "Isle Of Islay" are probably the only songs to reach popularity, every song on this album is a gem. "The Mandolin Man and His Secret" is one of my favorites by Donovan. At online 10 dollars this is a great buy, every Donovan fan should own it. Also, for those who think that Donovan and his music is for adults to reminisce about their childhood, im only 16.
  • An Album of My Youth

I have enjoyed this album since my teen years. I never saw it as a child's album. It was very much an album of the 60's with the return to nature and the British invasion to music. It is reminiscent of other English folk albums of the time like Tir Na Nog. The songs are stories, images, sparkling samplings of a simpler life.

We received this as a gift when we had our little girl in October. I love this album to pieces. We don't have any of Donovan's other albums, so I'm no expert -- but the songwriting is beautiful, they lyrics are whimsical and interesting, and the songs are catchy and full of wonder. It's such a refreshing break from all the synthesized, awful-sounding kids' music out there that makes you want to poke your eyes out. I listen to it almost every day with my daughter, and I look forward to her enjoying this album for years to come.
  • Songs for Little Ones

I bought an album in 1968 in Australia that I think was called "Songs for Little Ones", which contained what appear to be about half the tracks (all the ones that the reviewer says comes from Donovan's "inner child") on this album. I was looking for it on iTunes as a gift for a 6-year-old, and that I could enjoy as much as him (knowing that kids play the same stuff over and over). I have great memories of these songs.

This album contains some of Donovan's best songs, especially on the second of the two original records in the set. Unfortunately, most of these songs are probably unknown to many who have only been exposed to Donovan's AM radio hits. I disagree with the itunes reviewer's remark that they are "best enjoyed by adults with a silly streak." That might be more appropriate to a few on the first album, but the second is purely delightful songwriting at its best. After more than forty years, I still cherish this album.
