Rachmaninov's concerto No. 3 is considered one of the most difficult piano concerts to play. It should come as no surprise that it takes a pianist of the caliber of Vladimir Horowitz to do this performance. Now don't get me wrong, Horowitz is truly a virtuoso, but in this particular performance you can hear him make some mistakes. Oddly enough, the few mistakes and how he rushes into some of the more difficult sections just add to the thrill of listening to the Rach 3. Where other performers (Arcadi Volodos comes to mind) play perfectly and accurately, Horowitz adds passion and sounds like he's playing right at the edge of his ability. It gives this performance an edge that is lacking in other ones. All in all, this is a fantastic performance, and even thou the recording is a bit old, and you can hear it, I'm sure you will enjoy it thoroughly.
