    about 5 years ago I started dating a woman with taste, who takes me to Tanglewood every summer for shed seats and Carnegie Hall for 2-3 subscriptions a year, almost entirely piano soloists and violin soloists. After hearing many of the greats of today perform these classic Beethoven Piano Sonatas, I decided to research who was the "best" given tech, style and ability. It seemed that all the purists were in agreement, Vladimir Horowitz's 1960's era performances are considered some of the most amazing recorded with modern sound equipment. After hearing so many of these Sonatas live, I have to agree. Playing this with your home system LOUD is a truly enlightening experience. This is one of the best purchases ever. Complaints about the short 8th Sonata are directly related to tech limitations of the day and best addressed in Boydstra's review. Cheers. Peace.

  • The fault is not with iTunes

    Don't blame iTunes. The original album doesn't include the third movement of the Pathétique sonata (no. 8 in minor) either. Only the four sonatas listed on the album cover are included in full. The producers must have had extra space on the album to fill (a problem eliminated by CDs and, of course, mp3 formats) and figured 2/3 of a sonata played by Horowitz is better than none. And they were right. Horowitz's rendition of the first 2 movements is elegant, moving ("pathétique"), and beautiful—worth having even in its wounded state. I'd love to hear the full version of this particular performance, but I haven't yet found it anywhere else.

    This low rating has nothing to do with the actual performance. They have left of the third movement of the 8th sonata, thus revealing Itunes inattention to detail yet again. Do not buy this CD unless you know absolutely nothing about Music--in which case you will not mind the glaring omission.
