Honestly, it is such a great album. I remember what a big deal was made when Crack The Skye was released, but this release from 1st through the last song is frantic, with well crafted songs...

Pretty mellow. A well executed that continues Mastodon's trajectory away from metal and into pop-rock. A trend that has increased since after Crack the Skye hinted at that trajectory. Each successive album has had stand out-tracks that will hook enthusiasts of their first albums (albeit with lesser such tracks than the one that proceeded it). Fans of pop-rock might find a lot to like in this album. Fans of the heavier stuff might be dissapointed. Brent admits that he's not really into metal, and is the main guitarist of the band, so I can't see Mastodon ever going back into their more "metal" mind-set (especially as they get older and keep touring). It's not a bad album, it just might bore some of the extreme metal fans, and it might seem like the band is tired. I'm not a huge fan of Brann's constant sleepy-sigh vocals, some of you might really like it. Not going to listen to this album much, personally, and I'm not really excited about follow up albums the way I used to be. Fans of pop-rock might find this album to be amazing.

Their best album since Crack the Skye. Probably their most accessible album in their impressive catalog. They’ve definitely smoothed out their sound since their early days of Remission, Leviathan and Blood Mountain. Die hard fans of their early albums hate this one and think it’s soft, but it’s still better than anything Metallica has put out in the last 30 years and Tool’s albums post Aenima.

Another great album from these guys bringing hard rock and metal together and doing it so well. This is a dark album and it shows but still done in mastadon style.
