  • Seeing Suicide Note 1 and 2 Live

Circa 96-97 Zombie opened for Pantera. Pantera had the traditional giant heavy metal bed sheet up obscuring out view of the stage, they played the entirety of suicide note part 1 behind the bed sheet. Then the bed sheet drops with suicide note part 2 as Anselmo screams his lyrics and the bands hanmers their parts. I’ve seen amazing metal band live intros, but this may have been the best ever. Rest in power Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell

No other way to put it. Its a raw finantical outcome of meticulous aggression. The music, vocals, writing and overall composition is just a gem.

How can you go wrong with this one. Yes far beyond driven was brutal but this, this one floors me every time. Heavy fast focused. Sorry that the next album wasn’t as good. But in this one you get Pantera at their heaviest, focused and most brutal of all albums. There isn’t one song on here that is skipable. And to boot it has (my guitar idol’s) best solo ever in floods. If that song and solo doesn’t get to you then you’re not a true fan.

As "Cowboys From Hell" represented Pantera's official 'arrival,' "The Great Southern Trendkill" definitely, in my opinion, represents the peak of their catalog. This album had their most mature song writing, most haunting ballads, and incredibly crafted guitar solos from Dimebag Darrell, among other things. Phil's vocals sound absolutely brutal, complemented by screams from Seth Putnam. I must have listened to this album 100 times, even after I stopped listening to metal primarily. And years later it's been hard to go back to a lot of albums from my youth (looking at you, "Significant Other" by Limp Bizkit!), but I don't even flinch when it comes to this one. It's that good. Still. RIP Dimebag, and now RIP Vinnie Paul.
