  • A true breakthrough

Peter Gabriel’s last two albums still sounded like conventional rock n roll in comparison to his stint with Genesis. Here, I believe he found his true sound, which is that of a boundary pushing pop/world hybrid. With guest session musicians like Robert Fripp, Paul Weller, Phil Collins, and Kate Bush, every song stands out, from the nightmarish Intruder to the heartfelt protest of Biko, which unlike a lot of protest songs actually had a reason for its existence. If you don’t like it, oh well but if you do, you will be plenty rewarded with an iconic album whose scope extends beyond its time.

When this album came out, all of my friends & I played it till the grooves expanded as much as our mindz. One of the best from Peter Gabriel. We saw the concert at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. A great show. I saw Peter many times in concert. One of the innovators of stage theatrics in modern times. The tracks for lights & effects, Human Hamster ball, face cam, riding a Segway while singing into a segway for another song, people mover from a british phone booth while singing Come talk to me. Costumes. Some of the great shows. I will remember. The live version of No Self Control on Play's Live a favorite as well as I Don't Remember. Thank You Peter Gabriel for the passion to your art. >>> MTO <<<

Intruder is some fantastic storytelling & songwriting. What a great opener for such a great album.
  • Pete's Best

Prog Rock meets new wave. Sounds like Pete spent a lot of time with XTC's "Drums And Wires" (and Dave Gregory plays on this) and was inspired to write his best bacth of tunes. Phil Collins' drumming probably helped quite a bit, along with the idea to not use cymbals. His best post-Genesis album, despite the fact that Atlantic dropped him when they heard the tapes. Their loss, it is a deserved classic.

Do yourself a favor and buy this album, turn off the lights, get your headphones, hit play and enjoy and amazing trip full of images, sounds, twisted personalities and incredible musicianship... Awesome album!

My local record store guru suggested me this album because he is a HUGE Geneis fan and said this album was fantastic. He didn't tell me much about it, but I like a surprise here and there musiclly. I slapped the vinyl on and I heard the first side. The first four songs were a trip for certain. Intruder is a very eerie entrance into the mind of Mr. Gabriel. The soulful wailing of No Self Control is very alluring along with the fun gently played xylophone. Start is a beautifully sullen interlude and careens into I Don't Remember. Tony Levins Bass very thick and commanding with Gabriel's assertive vocal presence. Past that, It's good, but doesn't really stack up to the first four songs. Still an interesting album with unique intentions and sounds.
