  • Your Blues Ain't Like Mine...

ZZ Hill was one of the finest Blues singers ever. One of the most memorable experience in my life was to be in a bar on Chicago's South Side when the song "Someone Else is Steppin' In' would come on, and he would get to that line, "I got a new way of wearing my hair. Got a smile on my face, and you didn't put it there." And every woman in the bar would be singing along. It was just fantastic, all those women wiggling and wagging their fingers in the air. The thing is, that scene would play out in any bar where black people went, and it probably still would. There are not a lot of songs or singers who could have that effect on people. When ZZ Hill sang the Blues, he was singing blues we all knew about, on both sides. Who ain't been 'Cheatin' in the Next Room' or wanted to hear some 'Down Home Blues' every other record or two, or wanted to 'Bump and Grind' and get on down?
