Everytime I listen to this album I feel like Im reading a unique book that is compelling and creative. I learned Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds from a movie (Harry Potter & Deathly H p1). Since then I listened to their other songs and fell inlove. đź’ž

I only wish “Lightning Bolts” was included in this album.

First off, Nick Cave is by far one of my favorite artists of all time. The likes of PJ Harvey and Bowie are really the only ones that can compete with him in my book. The man is a master, and maybe that's why I find this album so frustrating. While this album could be seen as good, even great for another artist, we all know Cave is capable of so much more. Here, Cave follows his usual formula of using a simple groove to create a song around, but where he usually builds them up to something incredibly moving and emotionally powerful, many of these songs fall flat. The album just seems so hollow and dull. I never thought I'd hear Nick Cave sound emotionless when he sang. The songs here are drab and uninspired and either go on for too long, or end too soon in an anticlimactic way that makes me think, "Huh? That's it? Really?" I have a hard time making it to the end of most of them. This is coming from someone who loves many slow, minimal, long songs, but never ones with as little power as these. For such a short album, it's a chore to listen to all the way through. The darkness is gone, but so is the light, and he seems to have replaced both with nothing. This is Cave sounding pathetically normal. HOWEVER, there are still some incredible moments on here. The production is great, and the sweeping epic that is "Jubilee Street" is one of the best songs he's ever written. If you have a heart, this song will easily tug at its strings. "We know Who U R" and "Mermaids" are also good examples of Cave's abilities to move, despite their half-baked flaws. The lyrics are very good in places, and the awkwardly bad ones seem to be just Cave humoring himself, which can be appreciated. Also, these songs completely transform themselves live. They have the potential to be INCREDIBLE. Seeing him recently was jaw dropping. The biggest problem with this album is that the passion seems to be gone, but the live experience makes that an easy fix, You just won't find it here. Cave had big shoes to fill (his own), and he didn't quite do it here. A small scrape on an otherwise flawless career.
  • Either you get it or you don't!

Probably the most prolific and import albums in the last ten years. Other reviewers write about lack of melodies etc. - unfortunately - they are looking for something instead of feeling it. That is not the way to feel or listen music. You should not listen to music from a technical point of view. That will destroy any authentic feelings or emotions you will potentially feel. This album is a masterpiece from beginning to end. If you are a fan you will get it. Listening to this with out any understanding of the artist can evoke simplistic emotional critiques. Having seen him live was an amazing experience and performing with Warren Ellis was additionally reenforcing. Nick Cave is a true artist in every sense.

I bought this album for WE REAL COOL. Here is my experience listening to WE REAL COOL for the first time. First I got chill bumps. Basically I was one enormous chill bump. . Then I controlled my self to not act like a 15-year-old girl at a Beatles concert. Then I stopped myself from sobbing uncontrollably. Then for the rest of the day, I reminded myself to come straight home and buy this song. So yes, Nick Cave can rule the World!

It is so honest, beautiful, thoughtful and mature. He is such an amazing soul-channeling artist. I hear a human experience that is so personal, it's universal. His lyrical madness speaks truth. His sonic throbbing is grounded in rhythmic repetition and he has a vocal exposure that's both demonic, hypnotic and angelic.

I've been a supporter of nick cave since the boy's next door (I still play the door door album frequently), through the b-day party and all the bad seeds albums... It hurts me to say that this is by far my least favorite offering. It's just not up to snuff and doesn't compare with other material. I have always enjoyed all the different facets of the bad seeds' style and differences in each album for the moods they conjure, but I'm sorry... When you start singing about "Hanna Montana" something is wrong. There are moments when we catch a glimmer of past brilliance, but they are few and far between on this album... A true disappointment... Weakest song writing and imagery to date... Sorry!!!
