I have always felt the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is one of the hidden jewels in the music world. Particularly in the past decade. Having heard them live, it has always slain me why the group did not record more. I feel that in many aspects, the orchestra outshines many others that unfortunately have a large output. The playing on the this recording is a testament to the growth of this fine artistic jewel in an otherwise struggling city. Listen, and appreciate it for what it is. Wonderfully talented musicians led by a master given an orchestra worthy of his talents. I hope this is only the first of many. Sadly, the orchestra is currently on strike. The outlook is not good either financially if this strike continues. Hopefully they will return to the stage and recording. My only fault is the sound quality is a bit "distant" for my taste. Orchestra Hall in Detroit is acoustically wonderful. Hearing them live is a treat.

As the last reviewer has noticed it's been some time sense Detroit started to record. Thankfully the orchestra is in the capable hands of Sir Slatkin who has them back in top form. Detroit has always been a stellar band and with luck Slatkin will show the world that they are indeed a world class orchestra. The recording quality is OK but it's the playing that wins me on this. Rach was always better at piano playing then composing and I've had a love hate relationship w/ his symphonic output. Slatkin and the Detroit however breath life into it and give it a convincing shape and definition lost in other recordings. Bravo to all involved! -Bz

The Detriot Symphony in the past has given the music world many recordings - but many of those recordings were issued on LP. Great to see them releasing new recordings once again. Very fine playing, great audio work.
