Caught the Dave Rawling Machine at the Ryman last month. Immediately came home and bought this CD. Great music and outstanding performances all the way around.

The entire album is excellent. On the pulse of Revelator, with a new twist.... basically, timeless, classic, music. Method Acting and Ruby provide some of the best 15 mins of music I have heard in years. Support this music, it is real, raw, and great!

feel so lucky to have caught him live so many times while in the US, this is a brilliant album, with a particularly beautiful rendition of 'I hear them all', but I'd give an arm and a leg to get a 'live at largo' release with his covers of Candy Mountain, Diamond Joe, and Girls just wanna have fun

Oh my is this album good. I had seen dave rawlings enough in concerts that I thought about pleading with him to put an album out. And now that A Friend of a Friend is out, I couldn't be any happier. This album is soulful and optimistic and honest. Dave Rawlings is a musical genius in my opinion. The Cortez cover is just mind numbing it's so good. I'm just a very very happy fan. This album is what every artist should strive for.

A breakout from the second seat, A Friend of a Friend shows that there are two complete sets of artists involved in this pairing. The Dave Rawlings Machine stretches out what we have come to love, with Gillian singing behind Dave, and the addition of friends like Ketch, Willie and Morgan from Old Crow, and the legendary Benmont Tench. There's a blending going on here that brings a tear to your eye. From the haunting Ruby to Bells of Harlem you have hints of the familiar and the all new fun-loving side of this collection of wonderful musicians (and really, really nice folks!). This is enjoyable music from people who play really well and have fun doing it. Good job, Dave and Machine. Can't get this out of my head or my player. Can't wait to see you all again soon.

The only thing that could be better is hearing them live...(see NPR's all music considered podcast for a live treat)
