Antonio Sanchez is one of the elite drummers and musicians around. I saw him perform with the Pat Metheny Group at St. Lawrence University in upstate N.Y., and then with Gary Burton and Pat Metheny and a few other great ad hoc groups at the Montreal Jazz Festival a couple of years ago. He is in demand and seems to be well respected by a lot of fantastic musicians. After seeing him, he is the real deal. His compositions and his playing on this album were great to experience. He did not take the album over with the drums. If you get a Roy Haynes album where Haynes headlines, you have to hear Haynes set pumped up over all the other musicians. Though Haynes has some great work, that type of album gets old fast and is not really a communicative experience. Sanchez is beyond himself and is collaborating with the music and the musicians. It is a real treat.
