I had never heard about this women until she came to sing to my high school choir and it changed my outlook on music. She is absolutley wonderful. She has such a beautiful voice thats so unique. She is increadibly talented, i am 15 and look up to her a lot.

I bought this cd awhile back, and upon each listening I am moved by her sensitive, gentle approach, the sophistication of her phrasing and unique rhythmic sense. She's a gem - a rare find - which seems to be recognized by an impressive list of top players who have included her on their own albums. Each time I hear her, whether recorded or live, her approach seems to have developed a little further, and always a pleasant surprise to hear another moment in time of an artist continually growing and evolving. I look forward to her next release.

What a great discovery! I first heard her perform in Paris with the great jazz legend Wayne Shorter. In performance and on her CD, she interacts with the band, using her voice like an instrument. Her rhythmic, improvisational complexity is balanced, almost disguised by a subtlety and sensitivity more interested in seeking the essence and baring the soul. Her rapport with the amazing guitarist Lionel Loueke was profound, and their blending voices (heavenly) is captured on this CD, as well as very beautiful interaction with the pianist and other band members. Very talented, soulful musicians and a very special CD.
  • Potential for growth

Gretchen Parlato has recently relayed power-quotes by jazz fames, and rides pretty far in society with these undoubtedly heavy-weight names. When hearing her live, and on recordings, she shows potential for growth but is far from what the aforementioned ad campaigns suggest. Her voice is pretty, but not particularly original, and the selections are even less so. Compared to some of my favorite vocalists in this generation; Marta Gomez, Rigmor Gustafsson, Theo Bleckmann, Johanna Grussner and especially the embarrassingly underrated Sophie Duner; Ms. Parlato still has to grow the headroom necessary to become a truly expressive musician.

Each song has it's own feeling, and each one feels like the best one. Gretchen's a wonderful singer who just grabs your heart, and with great arrangements and a great band to back her, it'll become one of your favorite cds. Real genius. I can't wait for her next cd!
