Patti Smith was playing her own stuff at CBGB's when Punk started its rise. I never truly thought she was punk but she definitely influenced the more thought provoking bands. To me Radio Ethiopia is the best example of her range of work. From "P*****g in the River" a straight up rock song to "Poppies" which will mess with your mind when you are under the influence it has something for everyone. Any one who saw her induction into the Rock Hall of Fame on VH1 will know she's still got it 30+ years later.
