  • One of the greatest losses to rock music

News that Jet had broken up was such a loss to rock music and to me personally. I remember the day that it hit me how good Jet was. I had already owned all three of their albums, but i didn't really accept them as one of rock's elite. One random day Rip It Up came on while i was working out and BOOM, my eyes and ears opened and i realized just how much Jet brims with all th at is essential to rock and roll. I ran to my computer to see if there was news of a 4th album and I saw their website signaling that they had broken up less than 2 months before. Devastated. I didn't appreciate them until they were gone - isn't that always the way? But thank God for what we did get. Three solid albums by one of the last great pure rock bands. Nic's vocals are unparalelled. It's a classic rock voice, yet there's never been a singer to sound quite like him. It's both fresh and familiar, sensuous and primal. The instrumentals are just as good as the vocals. They are aggressive, cool, and raw. Clearly a band at the top of their game despite any internal strife. Though they sound like a lot of other bands that preceeded them, there's simply noone like them. You can get a lot of pieces of Jet elsewhere, but you can't get all of Jet anywhere else. Their sound is similar to a lot of bands that i love. They have the energy of AC/DC and sound like a cross of The Beatles, The Stones, and Led Zep - the titans of classic Brit rock. Who hasn't stood on ther shoulders? With a more modern twist, they also sound like Oasis with muscle. The very first customer review basically singled out the exact same bands that i hear in Jet. I think this album might just be their strongest of the three - despite not having any explosive and stand out hits like Be My Girl and Cold Hard from their first. It's not a perfect album, however. There were a couple tunes that i just couldn't quite keep in my library. They do have several core sounds and some of them are a little too far on the Beatles side of things. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but super Beatles tributes are not what I turn to Jet for. They are at their best when they are a hard rock band full of fire and animal instincts. A couple of them just weren't up to par as well. One of the songs, I believe, wasn't sung by Nic because it didn't sound anything like him. It was easily the weakest song on the album. Another was a little too cliche. It was, ironically, the title track. It's interesting that I didn't like it, because it seems to be one of the more popular songs on the album. The stats on this album are very strong. There's one 5 star song in Rip It Up, five 4 star songs, four 3 star songs and the rest are throwaways.

  • The review system has no validity

This is a prime example why the star review system on iTunes has no validity. This album was horrible and nobody bought it. The band has sold 4 million albums and 3.5 million of them have been on the first album which was outstanding. Yet they have the the same star rating? There has got to be a better ratings system. Anyway back to the band, it is hard to say what went wrong with this album. There are all of the elements of their first album but they need to be remixed, edited, and lyrics rewritten. Just listen to 'Kings Horses' and the annoying hoofbeats, did they really need a horse sound effect? Only 3 songs are worth putting in a deep mix would be 'Shine On', 'Skin And Bones', and 'Rip It Up' just to prove you have disposable income and you burnt it on this. I do hope they come back but I have not even spent time considering buying their 3rd album and since it has not sold I can only assume it is a waste of electrons and plastic.

I love this album, I listened to it alot in '06 when it was released, I kind of forgot about JET until I heard about Shaka Rock coming out, so I started playing this again, my only complaint is that I think "Come On Come On" should've opened the album, lol
  • What happened to Jet?!

After listening to Get Born, I decided Jet was one of the best contemporary rock bands out there--because they simply ROCK. Nic Cester has one of the most powerful voices out there. The extended screams in songs like Cold Hard B**** bring to mind rock gods like Roger Daltrey of The Who, or Brian Johnson of AC/DC--no doubt an influence of theirs. And these guys are young. In a music scene populated with teen sensations, emo, and death metal, Jet as a fairly new band was able to keep rock true to its roots. Who cares if some of their songs are three chords--or less? When they let loose, this band is able to unleash an incredible amount of energy, in a way the grand majority of current bandscan only dream of. My problem with Get Born was that in between the instantly catchy, hard-rocking tracks there were these weird, soft, slow ballads. It was an odd case of musical schizoprenia--two completely different bands on the same album. Now, on Shine On, the problem seems to have worsened. Well over half of these songs are indeed ballads, and many of them just don't sound like Jet at all. The whole album just reeks of pretense--the cheesy harmonies (which DO sound good, just out of place) reminiscent of The Beatles but not quite there, the chatting in between tracks, the weird reverse-reprise between the first track and the last? This isn't the work of a real rock band, it's a self-indulgent "masterpiece" overproduced to the point of nausea. I don't expect this review to be popular, but that's fine with me. I really do love these guys. They have the rare potential to single-handedly keep rock alive, but this album is not the one to do it. I'm hoping their new release will turn this around somewhat. Point is, if you're looking for Jet's "hard rock" personality, you won't find much of it here, but they do only have two albums out so it might be worth it anyway. There are some very good songs here. Hey Kids is one of my favorites. I just think the concentration is lower than it ought to be for a band with such remarkable potential.

fantastic guitar and drumming, JET is really coming into their own; Holiday does not get the respect it deserves, either. best song on the album.

This album is great. A great follow up to Get born, you will just want to keep on listening to it. It mixes up soft and hard rock and it is somewhat classical rock. It is just a great album that you should get.

Shine On is an awesome album. It's too good to only buy a few songs. You should definately go out and pick up the record. I can't believe this album didn't all that far. If it weren't for these modern times where the internet is the main source of band discovery, JET would definately be a frontrunner in the music industry. Well, in my opinion. :]
