  • Very Good Recording

This is, all in all, one of the best recordings of the 8th I have ever heard. That said, I noticed some here seem to have never heard Jascha Horenstein's 1959 recording witht he LSO. Unforutanately it is not on iTunes at this time, but it has what I consider to be the best instrumentals of any 8th recording. Really worth listening to if you can find it.
  • I love this interpretation.

I thought that this was musically solid without being showy. Mastering both the broad and small strokes, Wit sets comfortable tempi while coaxing a rare level of subtlety from his players. Choruses are clean and precise; soloists well balanced and integrated into the orchestral texture. My only complaint is an overly resonant acoustic, but Wit generally finds ways to make it work, mostly by stretching the tempi. Couldn't ask for a better one.
  • Absolutely the best Mahler 8th on the planet!

Simply put, this Mahler 8th is very clearly the best recording of this work of all time. Sir Georg Solti's 1971 Decca recording has stood as the finest, challenged by only a handful of horrible renditions - Like Simon Rattle (erratic tempi changes), Shaw (Pretty but not deep or meaningful), Boulez (Worst Overall), Inbal (Only focusing on the Opera of the symphony - completed with horrible soloists and a pathetic organ) and Gergiev (My favorite until I heard this version). Of all the words I could express about this recording, I will limit myself. First of all, the acoustics are absolutely perfect. The sound is stunning, the organ bombastic and just enough reverb to keep my attention focused. The soloists are the best ever to sing the work. To experience the best of the solists, try track 18. What outstanding performances! Also, Antoni Wit throws himself at the work, causing both orchestra and choir to perform at 110% of the ability other orchestras demonstrate. Finally, the most impressive part of the entire recording was the finale. Towards the end of my first listen, it was already at the top of my recordings, five star. However, Wit's ending brought so much more attention to the view of Mahler's Mahler 8. A gong was used to add sound, and as the brass repeated their fanfare until the organ forces the sound to bow down and the conclusion is brought down, the sound was in a continuous crescendo. The best part of the entire album, at least for me, was the last minute. In addition to the amazing crescendo to the organ's powerful entrance, after the entrance, I was impressed that the sound kept increasing. Mahler described the final pages as, "Try to imagine the whole universe beginning to ring and resound," and I find that most conductors fail to notice the significance of such a remark. Truly, if not the whole universe, at least every part of my house absorbed the monumental impact from the enormous ending. Truly a great performance that can and will stand as your only recording, far ahead of all other versions in every respect, without any problems or "fatal flaws". Enjoy!

This is by far the best! Moving, gripping and spiritual.
