I dare anyone to listen to this alone with a bottle of good wine and not cry at some point- I dont want to repeat all the overused (and TRUE) adjectives, all I can say is that it touches me, straight to the deepest parts of my heart and sets my nerves on fire. I was there that night. It seemed every latin person in New York City, from every country, waving every flag showed up to hear these songs. Beautiful old songs that we had grown up with and come to love in a deeply profound sense. Yes, she's old and yes, perhaps there are/were singers with a better technical command of this idiom but this woman changed our lives that night. Or perhaps she just took us back to that place where all our lives began...

True, Ms Vargas' voice has deteriorated throughout the course of her years in the industry. Yet you still sense; feel the agony and sorrow through her absorbing voice. The first time I heard of her was five years ago, I'm now 24, when watching an independent film. A gay movie that is. The song was Paloma Negra. It was a very fitting closing song for that movie. Listening to it filled me with much emotion, my eyes brimmed with tears. Another song that gets to me every time is 'Amaneci En Tus Brazos'. No other artist has ever cause such feelings to surge simply with the sound of her voice. No, not even LOLA BELTRAN. Chavela is and will forever be 10 times the singer Lola was.
Chavela's and Lola's singing style is different but Chavela's was more accomplished, agile, artful: Dexterous.
Chavela has still got it going!

how do you get to CH? in her case, a lifetime of sorrow and trouble. you feel it in her voice. CV takes her time and only the turmoils that she has encounter could give her the sound of truth. i learned much about her after a friend recomended this album. OUTSTANDING.
