  • Post-Bop at its best!

One of the best Hutcherson albums out there. One of the best post-bop albums out there. James Spaulding contributes loads to this fantastic record, playing flute on 3 of the 7 songs, and alto sax on the other 4. The title track is probably the highlight of the album - I am in awe at how fast and masterful someone can play vibes, considering how the song is almost at breakneck tempo. Spaulding’s alto solo on that track is also flawless, ending with the perfect amount of resolve. Ankara has one of the most beautiful chord progressions I’ve ever heard, and, correct me if I’m wrong, I think it is in 7/4 time. A Time To Go is an amazing ballad written by Spaulding, and Nocturnal (by Joe Chambers) is a ballad with one of the coolest and most mysterious melodies ever written. Spaulding also plays flute on those two songs, and on Effi. Irina is the only track that I’m not the biggest fan of, but everything else here makes this album a gem. If you can get your hands on this, for goodness sake, please do so.
