This is a fantastic effort by Josh Ritter - probably one of the better albums of the year. For me, The Animal Years remains Ritter's opus, but this collection of songs stays with you listen after listen. It's quite an accomplishment. Even the throw-away songs have some of those lines that get heavier with each listen. What happened to the river bed? "Getting Ready to Get Down" is a true gem - one of the most joyous songs of dissent and defiance I have ever heard. Congratulations to Mr. Ritter, one of the more honest and humble song writers of his generation.

Where to start? Met Josh in MD for lunch and his jacket is well worn along with the right tongue of his shoe flopping as he took stage. Down to earth. Real. Raw. Rowdy. His music is reminiscent of the great story tellers like Dylan, Chapin, Cash, The Boss, et al. If you can see hhis show, you will go see them all.

I’ve been a Josh Ritter fan for some years now, and this album really stands out for me as something special. Each instrument and effect has it’s purpose, place and space. The songs have room to breathe. They take me somewhere. It’s exceptional. Thank you!

Josh Ritter is our Springsteen. I don't know how it's possible for someone to consistently write music this great, but I am thankful. It hits especially hard when I drive back to my hometown in the rural Midwest and blast this album. "Homecoming" may be my favorite JR song to date, and this album is littered with tracks at that level. If you are a fan of "small town Americana" tunes (my homemade genre) - get this album now. You will be absolutely shocked and floored with how it speaks to you.
  • Another great album!
