Like Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You", Peter Gabriel has discovered that he really is an angel, and can fuse heaven and earth with his music. In this difficult time, it is wonderful to have something to hold on to. thanks!

  • Gabriel's Best Album (or One of the Best Albums of the '80s or Perhaps All Time)

Love this album so much. I feel it has stood the test of time and there are so many gems. My favorite songs are Red Rain, Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up, and In Your Eyes. Mercy Street and That Voice Again are also beautiful songs. Although Big Time feels a bit corny next to the pure brilliance of the other tracks, it is certainly not bad. In my opinion, the only weak points are the experimental pieces This is the Picture and We Do What We're Told, but they are an expression of Gabriel's artistry and part of the album's message. An essential to any collection.

I was working at an actual record store when this came out. I always played it loud on "store play". Red Rain rocked. Jeff B
  • Boring. This proves who the real talent in Genesis was.

There's very little that i can say that i like about this album. The synth sounds are kind've a classic 80's sound that reminds me of many 80's songs that i actually do like. Also, Sledgehammer is actually a good song and pretty much the only song worth keeping, but even that song is still only 3 star quality. The overall feeling that i was left with after reviewing this album was "I can't believe I've had this album on my IPod for the last 11 years." Most of the songs drag on and feature average vocals (at best). Most of the tracks are far too long for how boring and forgettable they are. Maybe if they had been shorter they would be more memorable and tolerable, but who knows? Some are just awful slogs of fake instruments, weak lyrics and mediocre vocals. I was surprised that i even had to chuck the song In Your Eyes. I thought i would find that it was worth keeping as it was both a hit and one i'd heard before, but what i found was a song as bad and rambling/mumbly as your average Sting song. I don't need most Sting songs on my IPod and I certainly don't need a Sting soundalike. When you compare the stats from this album to the stats from Phil Collins' more popular albums, it's clear who the real talent in Genesis was. There's one 3 star song in Sledgehammer and one 2 star song in Big Time. The rest are all throwaways of varying levels from boring to awful.
  • Peter Gabriel at his best - songs are not in the correct order.

So was his first and only real commercial success, and proably one of his best albums. Certainly one of my favorites. Itunes screwed-up again: songs on this version are not in the correct order. "In Your Eyes" should be track 5, not track 9.
