  • The Real Winner of the War of 1812

The best Overture of 1812 recording is on the Telarc label. They use digital recording methods and let me tell you, you play this piece at high volume and you will destroy your speakers. TELARC also has this album in a Dolby 6.1 version. And yes, they have cannons. I also have an ANCIENT Mercury labeled album of the Overture of 1812 with Cannons. You have to have cannons.

This album looks lousy don't buy it. You need more than three songs for a good classical album.
  • You want the version like in V for Vendetta?

Forget this album. The one you want is done by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. They are the ONLY ones who do it right and have REAL cannons going off at the end. All others pale in comparison. Costs more, but well worth it. Once you've heard the NYP version, you'll never be able to listen to another one.

I, too, came searching for a version of '1812' worthy of my ears after hearing it anew in 'V for Vendetta,' but this version disappoints in the lack of richness of tones in the opening section. For a better version, I recommend the Ukraine Symphony, though unfortunately to get it you'll have to pay for the whole 'Best of Tchaikovsky' album. But for me, hearing the opening violin harmonies sound just right was worth it. These are good songs, but, perhaps because of the lack of recording quality, the sound just doesn't come through. But then again, maybe it just takes a slavic orchestra to get a slavic composer's music right.
