I found this album to be very good. I had to listen to it a few 5 times within a few months but it grew on me. Standing in the flames and Apocalyptic fear are good. Give them a listen.
  • Not that bad at all!

Sure this album comes nothing close to Serpents of the Light but it sure gets the job done! It features similar elements from the last album like the more guttural vocal style but lower and much better this time around. Most of the tracks are more groove oriented and far more catchy then anything they released before and if you are into groovy death this release should satisfy you. Just don't expect Once Upon the Cross part 3 or you won't be happy.

Ill give this album 3 stars, its pretty good by no means their best. If your new to Deicide I would suggest starting out with "Once Upon the Cross" (IMO their best record to date). The ironic thing about this record is that Glenn Benton himself has gone on record saying that this was a "terrible and rushed" record that fans should avoid like the plague, as they only recorded it to satisfy, and get out of their recording contract at the time.
  • A More Melodic Change Of Pace

Satanic Death Metal act Deicide follows up on Serpents Of The Light with a more melodic style this time around. Most of the songs on this album follow the same structured timed riff and overwhelming blastbeat pattern. While this sounds very repetitive, and it is at certain times, they somehow managed to refresh the album with tracks such as "Standing In The Flames" and "Bible Basher". The lyrics are typical of Glen Benton, lashing out at the Christian faith and come complete with direct attacks against Christ himself as well as other blasphemous themes. It's all in good fun however. What separates this album from the rest of Deicide's works is the semi-experimental change in drumming, while maintaining the relentless assault of Benton's tortured growls and the Hoffman brother's distinct type of guitar playing. For those looking for a definitive Deicide album, this may not be the one. But if one is sick of the same generic death metal formula, this album might be a surprise for you.

Im a big Deicide fan but this is not at their best at all. The Stench of Redemption is one of my favorite metal albums and tops this cd by a long shot. Deicide is an awsome band with a great balance of major rifts and drums. If you like this band I would also sugest belphegor, behemoth, and cryptopsy. All great bands.
