    This is most frustrating. I have two cds of outtakes from these sessions that sound much, much better than this "official" release. You can hardly hear any bass on this release. The horns are drastically panned to the side. Ugh! This is a classic recording that sounds like garbage. On the bootlegs the bass is right there and the horns are front and center. The sound is much fuller and the way it should be. Avoid this release until Warner gets it right.

    Monk is a favorite of mine, but I don't have anything he recorded that finds him challenged, spurred and prodded the way Blakey does here. This was the first Blue Monk I heard and I fell in love with Monk's composition style then and there. This recording crackles with intensity. If you think Jazz is old fashioned and new music has more energy, just listen to this one - and pay special attention to the drums!
