As a long-term fan of Thrice I wanted to live with the album for a little while before I wrote a review. After listening through Horizons/East several times I can say it's truly a fantastic album. It's at times proggy, experimental; the best attributes of Thrice shine on these tracks. This may be their best album since the Alchemy Index. Songwriting is of primary importance for me, and this album has great songwriting. I've always had the sense that Thrice had a greater level of genius than what they generally do, that they could do better somehow. This album reveals a bit more of that genius in my opinion. Great songwriting, interesting arrangements, a commanding sense of dynamics, and an unmistakable emotional resonance mark Horizons/East. Lyrically as strong or stronger than anything they've done, tracks like "Scavengers" (along with the music video) tell tremendously moving stories. The stoic crunch and patience of "Still Life" shines with the line, "There's a whetted axe with a weathered handle, and the weight of it is dear to me". This is perhaps the most beautiful vocal moment on the album, and my how Dustin's vocals have aged. Like a fine wine or your favorite leather work boots, the grit and texture of his voice have improved with time, able to belt with fierce power and croon with thick soul. Not many vocalist truly improve with age. Songs like the gorgeous "Dandelion Wine" (echos of Jeff Buckley's "Lilac Wine"?) show the band's heavy, soulful, starkly beautiful creativity. The only song I'm not crazy about on the album is "The Dreamer". The rest are fantastic, really.

I keep giving the new stuff a try, but I won’t even listen to whatever they put out in the future. Gave it one time through and will be moving on.
  • Always rising like a Phoenix Ignition.

I’ve been listening to Thrice since the year 2000, and have seen them evolve from a “cool band” to solid and technical musicians. Horizons also demonstrates Dustin Kensrue’s amazing writing of lyrics. The songs stay with me (for good reason) and elicit thought. This is an amazing album by an amazing group of guys together since high school. :)

It’s mellow, but an album you can listen to from beginning to end.
  • Thrice-bros need not apply.

This album is a brilliant feat of soaring choruses, interesting time signatures, and layered melodies. It harkens to the experimental nature of Alchemy Index, haunting grooves of Vheissu, and the raw emotional gravitas of Beggars. Any Thrice-bros who can’t let go of the past and want every album to sound like illusion or artist will be disappointed. However, those of us who are willing to imbibe the musical journey Thrice has set us on will no doubt be left wanting more. 5/5

I’ve been listening since 1999... this album is “woke” garbage. They’re trying too hard to be Radiohead rather than themselves. The three singles were pretty cool but every other track was a huge disappointment (and that is quite literally a first for one of mankind’s greatest bands of all time). Sad day...
