I have to disagree with the comments on the quality of Prine's voice in the review posted here. I just saw John Prine live at a spectacular NYE show with Kacey Musgraves and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (including Amanda Shires). Prine performed "Mental Cruelty" with Musgraves from this new album and also "In Spite of Ourselves" with Shires. Yes, his voice has changed since his surgery for squamous cell carcinoma on his neck (skin cancer, not throat cancer), but he went through extensive therapy which has resulted in an amazingly strong voice for a 70 year old. It is clear that Prine loves to perform, is committed to mentoring younger performers, and enjoys collaboration with others. He had a smile (although he says it is no longer an "Illegal Smile") on his face the whole time he was on stage. I don't think Prine writes songs for the sake of putting out new albums. I think he writes when the feeling moves him. If he chooses to forsake writing now that he has reached 70, so be it. His influence will still be made on those he encourages and works with. We may even begin to hear from his two sons, who played and sang with him on the final encore of the concert. My suggestion is: Do not miss the opportunity to see him live! And, yes, this album is worth a listen!

Having a love for country from the 50's & 60's and 70's, and John, this album is just what I needed. More importantly, what a great way to introduce fans of Prine to discover the songwriting and sound of country music's finest legends with today's talent. Great musicianship all the way around. An authentic mix of today and that vintage sound. You can hear the awe in their voices as they sing along side of him. "Just waitin'" in contrast, is the perfect ending. Pure Prine. Now go out and explore the writers. If you can, see him live and smile. He'll do that to you.

Wowzers! Real dopejazz of a record plucks the heart strings every track. If you feel like taking a jounrey down the road to country loving and broken hearts this album will guide you all the way down. John and his duet partners are channeling some of the rawest music in America from the spirit of legends.

In my opinion, this music is John Prine's total wheelhouse. And this album just makes me smile.
