  • Young Old Farts

My gawd, I've never seen so many narrow minded, hypoctical reviews by so-called hipsters in my life just because "your" band decided to evolve beyond your comfort zone. You sound like your parents. Or, worse, your grandparents. Imagine if The Beatles had just played variations on "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" for ten years? That's what you're basically saying you want the Avetts to do. This is the Album of the Year, and, yes, you can partly thank Rick Rubin. He's one of (if not) the best producers around. Why do you think they keep working with him? I guarantee it's not mandated in their contract. "No Hard Feelings" is a masterpiece. So is "True Sadness." Or are you deaf as well as ossified? The Avett Brothers are no old farts, only the people complaining about "clapping samples." So what? If you're so into nostalgia lucky for you: you can always go back and listen to their earlier albums. A big shout out, though, to the rest of you who gave this album five stars. It deserves twice that many.

I was introduced to this band by watching their new documentary and I fell in love with this band. They have the courage to express what we all feel at times in our life. People loving people.

Yes the album is different from their normal work. Get over it. Their muse changed for this album. They are still fantastic musicians and this album still shows that.

Not totally bad but they sound more like Mumford and Sons. That is not a compliment. Another band past their prime.

Some people are dismissing this new Avett Brothers album based on a few clips of a couple of songs... I wasn't too impressed at first either based on the samples on iTunes, but I decided to buy it before the concert here, and I LOVE IT. If you like the Avett Brothers, you will like this album. Most of the songs are classic Avett Brothers (bluegrass tinged ballads, etc.) there are a couple of exceptions where they use samples and "modern" recording techniques for a more modern rock sound. After listening to them a few times in the context of the whole album, they have grown on me. Satan Pulls the Strings is my least favorite track, though they perform it much better live. Yes it is a well produced album like the last few with Rubin as producer, but I like them too. And if you get a chance see them live! Their concerts are Bruce Springsteen level of greatness.

With these engaging lyrics, these guys seem to know more than you'd expect from young people. Tuneful songs that will be pleasantly stuck in your head.
